Description

From the genus Catharanthus, which means “pure flower”, Vinca are a colorful addition to walkways, flower beds and summer patio containers. These bushy perennials are known as annual vinca or Madagascar periwinkle and produce multiple blooms in long lasting mounds of heat loving color. Technically a ground cover, vinca is easy to grow and loves full sun or partial shade. These pretty annuals will even grow indoors if there is full light and good ventilation. Be sure the container has a drain hole in the bottom and allow plants to dry between waterings as they don’t like soggy environments. Vinca will reach between 8 in. to 12 in. tall and will spread between 12 in. W to 18 in. W. Vinca will grow in a multitude of locations in well-drained fertile soil. Remove faded flowers for best display of color. Vincas don’t like cold weather, so wait to plant until after the last frost or after May 1st. Grow vinca as an annual in zones 2 – 8 and as a short-lived perennial in zones 9 – 11. Vinca attract butterflies and come in pink, purple, red, white, magenta and bi-colors.
